Tomesch sighs.

What a total, complete mess.

The desk before him is tiled: On one half papers sprawl over pictures, folders lie on data stores, audio tapes and hand written notes. The chaos continues on the floor. On the other half of the table there is one single folder, rather thin, labeled “Final draft, copy T. Nokal”.

Tomesch continues to stare at the folder. Finally he takes it, flips briefly through it. He knows it very well, even more does he know what's not in there. He brings up the same document on his screen, signs it, encrypts it and sends it.
This is it. This is the verdict in the case “Borman vs Nokal”. He was the last judge of three to sign it.

Tomesch thinks back: Two months ago, he was eager to “sort everything out”. Before he even knew, what exactly to sort out. Now he knows. Generations of intrigue, plotting, blackmailing, malice, treachery. Members of clan Nokal working against clan Borman. And vice versa. For generations . Fueled by their ingenious slave masters, family Jipur.
Tomesch sighs again.
He sees how awfully clever they were keeping the slaves occupied with each other in exchange for little “favors”. Which consisted mainly of not doing something to a member of the own clan. That is, if said clan could blame the other, however thinly disguised.

For generations. Tomesch asks himself, if he really was so naïve just two months ago. “Sort everything out, sure”, he spits out. The whole trial was a complete waste of time. None of the old hostilities are even mentioned in the verdict. Neither are the reasons. Least of all there is a solution.

After all this investigation, after getting a neutral judge all the way from Pator to preside the clans court, after all this work and pain to see what his own clan did to Borman (and what Nokal suffered from them). For a week of better food, a day off or other trifles... Nobody is interested. Nobody cares. Borman wants revenge for Konar Borman, who was murdered by Ran Nokal. Nokal wants to protect Ran, because Rans brother was murdered beforehand, because a sister was murdered, because a father was murdered... all the way back, and the final because is: Because someone got meat and the other severe beating for disobeying. Nobody sees this. And the real “because” is completely forgotten: Because the Amarr are so damned good at organizing something to do for the slaves so they don't happen to get some peculiar ideas.

Judge Tomesch Nokal won't be at the court tomorrow, when Ran is banned from the planet and taken somewhere else. Tomesch leaves tonight and returns to space. Becoming just Tomesch again, no title, no sir. He won't be there, too, when Ran is hunted and finally killed. He will be in space. And at the following trial “Nokal vs. Borman” he will be in space, too.

Tom Boone had been a psychologist for the last 28 years. When the implant and cloning technology were introduced, he was one of the first to study the effects. He was one of the first to publish research papers, paving the paths and setting the groundwork for others to build upon. In short, he was one of the best heads in the field.

About three years ago, he had left the Republic University and started his own very specialized psychotherapy center. Accepting only capsuleers. One of those capsuleers was sitting on the other end of the comfy couch in the warmly-lit "talking room" with him. There was tea on the table as well. This particular capsuleer had been his client for the last two and a half years, though the visits were rather sporadic. While his own studies recommend at least biweekly sessions during active duty, his computer had informed him that the last visit of this client had been over three months ago.

"Hello, Arkady", said Tom, using the first name primarily to give a warm and welcoming feeling. "How are you doing?"

"Better, I guess. I had hoped the paranoia was gone by now, but I have reasons to believe that it's not."

Tom put up a worried look and nodded slowly. Sadik did not suffer from real paranoia. He was overworked and burned out, which leads to a much more sensitive personality. And in the world of thieving, griefing and scamming that the capsuleers live in, that makes you afraid, and you see more of those dangers than you'd usually would. Sadik liked to give things a name, though. It made him feel having power over them. So Tom had decided to not correct him.

"There have been a few incidents recently", Sadik went on, "but I got over them quickly. Except the recent drama in my corp, which has been absolutely incredible. Either I'm starting to lose my grip on reality completely, or we have half a dozen spies in our corp."

Tom thought for a moment. "Can you tell me about it?"

With capsuleers, one of the most difficult problems was that they wanted your help, but ideally not tell you anything. They saw you as a threat. Probably rightly so, as knowledge is power, but it did not make the job any easier. Sadik's reply surprised Tom.

"I guess so. Ok. Let's see." Sadik took a few moments to collect himself. "There are four main characters in this play. We have the Wife and her Husband, we have the Friend of the Husband, and we have the Lover. The Lover sleeps with the Wife, and so the Husband wants to kill the Lover. So far, so cheesy."

Tom had raised both eyebrows. "That is quite a plot for that play."

"It's by far not all", Sadik went on. "So we have this show-down. The Lover and the Wife are in a bar. The Husband and the Friend enter. The Husband says he just wants to talk. The Friend is dressed in a full Blood Raider Body Armor."

Tom blinked, "Pardon?"

"A full Blood Raider Body Armor. You know, the nice guys who like to bleed out humans."

"... I thought I had misheard."

"Well, ok. So the Husband says he wants to talk. Then the Friend, in full body armor, draws his sword and steps towards the Lover, and says 'I want to kill you.' But because he's not a spoilsport, he throws the Lover the sword. The Lover concludes quickly: He wants to beat me up so the Husband does not kill me."

Tom looked up from his notes. "Er. What?"

"What I said. It turned out to be true, too. The Friend was there in Blood Raider outfit to beat up the Lover so the Husband wouldn't beat him up worse."

Tom stared blankly at Sadik.

"I'm not kidding! They didn't discuss this beforehand, just from the scene I described above, the Lover concludes quickly that this was the case. And indeed, the Friend did not kill the Lover, only beat him up badly. In the course of which, the Husband kills security guards which try to stop the Friend from beating up the Lover."

Sadik took a deep breath. "Ok. So, investigations turn out that the Friend is under the control of Evil Blood Raider Mind Control Implants, which he can not get rid off by cloning or medical help. He also feels it not particularly necessary to get himself taken into security custody because of this slight problem."

Tom had dropped his notebook to his knees and was looking at Sadik with curious eyes for the last part of the story.

"For added humor", continued Sadik, "the Husband flees from Republic space, and the Wife, a Caldari Militia member, at war with the Republic, contacts us to help her locate the Husband who just had killed one of our guys. But now, to the point where I'm actually having problems."

Even after all these years, capsuleers did not cease to amaze Tom. After a story like this, a normal human would already be close to breaking and in heavy need of support. Capsuleers live with thousandfold death every day. Their sense of scale was totally skewed.

"Now, we have a number of corp members who look at this story and say that all is fine with the Friend. He didn't do anything bad, as he didn't kill anyone himself. He was even nice and wanted to protect the Lover, obviously. And anything bad he might have done was caused by the Mind Control Implants, so not really his fault at all. Now my question to you: Am I going off totally if this sounds so fishy, so incredible contrieved and made up that I don't believe a single word of it? That this is just something to hide the actual thing, whatever it is? And that the people in my corp who try to defend these actions are actively helping in this hidden agenda?"

Ah. That was the problem. The "paranoia", as he called it. Tom had no idea. The whole story sounded fantastic, but so did most stories of capsuleers. They lived in a different world.

"I'm not sure", Tom remarked. "The play in which a group of half a dozen people implement a grand scheme which they hide with another grand scheme is not less contrieved than the one you told me about. Is the Friend known to the people who try to defend him?"

"Oh, yes", Sadik nodded. "He's a corp member for a long time, and many know him from before, too."

"As I thought, then." Tom tried to put up an encouraging smile. "From what it sounds to me, the others, the ones not involved, are in a serious shock. They do not want to accept that an old friend of theirs would behave like this. So they try to assert their reality ontop of what happened, trying to make things undone in their mind. This is quite a normal reaction. It can go clinical if they overdo it."

Tom used a few pseudo-scientific words in his explanations. Sadik liked this - he feels taken serious if someone does not hide behind "simplified words". But it's easy to misstep here. If he got the impression that someone was trying to impress him with big words, he could get seriously nasty. In the beginning, Tom had overstepped the line a few times, but by now, he knew Sadik well enough to hit the spot.

"So", Sadik looked at Tom. "What should I do now? I'm totally at a loss."

"Aren't you rather busy with this Fleet work?"

"Yes, quite so."

"Does this issue need your input? Or are there others who are handling it?"

"Hm. We have other directors and the CEO working on it."

"Well, take a step back and see how it goes. Being less involved often helps getting perspective on an issue, if it's still necessary then. It might not sound particularly satisfying, but you need to think of yourself from time to time."

Sadik leaned back against the couch, sipped on his tea, and thought for a while. "I guess I could do that."

Some discussion about other corp members and other headaches followed, but Tom didn't pay particular attention anymore. The main problem Sadik had come for was settled, the rest was just routine. A few pleasantries later, and Sadik was gone.

Capsuleers.

They're all insane.

Fifinella takes another gulp from the by now half-empty whiskey bottle.

"See, I need a moral compass. No, um, that's not right. I have a moral compass, yes, I do. It points to whattyacall 'em, moral direction. For me, that's 'freedom'. Every man, woman, and whathaveyou, heehee, *hic*, has the basic right to freedom. That's why I oppose slavery with every fibre of my body. Yeah, given freedom, half the current slaves might well starve to death in a ditch, but at least they'd have the freedom to do so. Hell, they would even have the freedom to become voluntary slaves, if they wanted to. Or well, there's the Vitoc, which would kill a whole lot of them."

Another large sip from the bottle ensues. Her stare seems fixated on the drops of liquid on the table top.

"Anyway, where was I? Oh right, moral compass. No problem there, got one, safely tucked away somewhere. Know exactly where it's pointing, no worries. What I DON'T have is a, uh, let's continue with that analogy, a whatsit, those guys who come aboard a ship, no not spaceship, a real, boner fido, heehee, water-splashing, cargo-carrying ocean liner, down there on the balls of mud. A pilot! Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. I have a compass, but I need a pilot. I'm a Pilot that needs a pilot. You know, because on the way to where I'm going there's all these shoals and sharks and... shit. Man, this is a great analogy. So I need a pilot to help me navigate, to litshurally choose the best route, to where my compass is taking me. You know? So I don't become a terrorist, like U'K, killing for the killing's sake, while threading still in the water. Although now that they've gotten help from a bigger fish in the bigger pool, they're actually getting somewhere. Why the hell are all my analogies so watery? Anyway..."

Yet another large gulp of whiskey disappears down her throat.

"Where was I? Pilot! Right, right. So don't want to become a terrorist. Don't want to lose it completely and become something worse. And you know what? It happens to a lot of Caldari, I think. We've been pretty much brainwashed since kids to believe the whole world is this way or that way. and then the select few get trained as pod pilots, and suddenly there's no more veil of propaganda between us and the real world. Puts a fucking zap on your head, that's for sure. Nearly blew my mind when it happened. When suddenly 20 years of your life turns out to be a lie perpetuated by a bunch of fuckers who own everything a human being could dream of, and yet yearn for more. Some go mad. No, maybe we all go mad, but different kinds, levels of mad? Like, I went only a little mad, or at least that's what I tell myself, while others go all the way to cuckoo land and just empty their bowels, start wearing their pants on their heads, preferably not in that order, and just start exterminating every living being they can lay their hands on. Or are the ones who go the most mad the ones who stay and support the system that created them and lied to them? Dunno..."

The bottle is now cradled firmly in her arms like a baby or a dear pet and she's taking small sips from it between almost every sentence of her soliloquy.

"So here I am, no compass, only... Nonono, I have compass, pointing to where I want to go, need pilot, and I don't know who or where that is. Ran into some nice people who helped me at least get into grips of myself, helped me find my compass, or define it, or tune it, whatever, got my moral compass pointing in the right direction. But I'm never sure when I meet new people, join new groups, whether they're the pilot I need to navigate through the... shit...storm. Shoals. Shoals and sharks. But I'll keep looking. Maybe I'll scrape on some shoals on the way, maybe I'll get nibbled at by the sharks, but pilot or no, I'm heading in the right direction. Would just be quicker with a pilot. Only some pilots might be sharks in disguise. Now there's an image heehee*snort* *hic*, fucking shark with a mask of an old, friendly sailor with a pipe stuck in the side of it's mouth, going all 'top o' the mornin' to ya, young lass!'..."

There's a long silence, then suddenly Fifinella empties the rest of the bottle in a single gulp, and gets up.

"Anyway, thanks for the whiskey. Not my favourite brand, but it never seems to be."

She heads for the door with a very unsteady gait, muttering "fucking sharks..." on her way, and is gone.

As everyone has guess, we are no longer part of the alliance. Im not going to get into it outside of the disagreements between Roc and I forced us out of the alliance. From what I have been told the majority of the alliance is happy about this, so congrats to everyone, you got rid of us.

As such, we are requesting you remove all access and standings to our corp. We still have access to the Alliance channels, the capital planning channels, and intel channels. Please also set us to neutral at this time, as we refuse to fly with people who label us traitors.
Fly safe, Fly far.
Ms. Minhaven.
PS, Rocius, I will never forget the nights we spent together, Its a shame our differences shattered our love.

Despite all the whining that there's too little backstory, there are way too many chronicles and short stories for my taste. Still, some of those I read are awesome. But - which did I miss?

Post your (one) favorite "prime fiction" story / chronicle / short stores / newspiece / whatever, and tell us why it is your favorite :-)

I'll start with one of my favorite chronicles: Fedo Song.

http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Fedo_Song_(Chronicle)

There are a few other chronicles I really liked, most of which I would classify as "nice". This one is not "nice". It doesn't give great insight into the backstory. It doesn't give hints or ideas for my own RP story arcs. But - it is by far the most creepy chronicle I've read. The creepiness makes it just absolutely awesome.
What's yours?

My favorite votes - i.e. "this is going to be raised to CCP", nothing from CCP yet:

- Blackops boost
- FW NPCs: "It was agreed that it is an exploit that faction militia can be avoided (ignored) by players with high standings and that the NPCs they should use the militia flag instead."
- FW complex spawning to be fixed (various issues, including post-DT spawns)
- Docking games fixes
- Hybrid gun balance failed - because of formality problems. But at least the Eos is supposed to get a boost.
