Back inthe 1990's a South African director created a short film called "Alive In Joburg". It was set in alternate time line Aparthied RSA. Alien refugees had parked thier damaged craft over Johannesburg and settled parts of the local squater camps / slums.
It was a brilliant piece of work by Niell Blomkamp, who used proper police kit, local news footage spliced with CG and the "interviews" are spot on.
It seems that Mr Peter Jackson liked it, and has helped turn this short into a full length film: District 9.
I am really looking forward to this one.
