Gradient is proud to announce that our Material Index has been updated to a completely new version with many improvements.
The new index can be found on the new Gradient corporate homepage:

Changes
New Uploader
We have written a new uploader for the index from scratch. The uploader updates the index with market data directly from your Neocom. The new version is available here:
http://gradient.electusmatari.com/uploader/
The new Gradient Data Uploader now also supports a number of extra upload options, including Market Order uploads, uploads of the status of the war zone, and faction association of corporations, allowing us to keep a better eye on corporations in the Amarr militia.
The old uploader will cease to work in the near future, so please deinstall it and upgrade to the new one.
New Algorithm
We have reworked the way the index is calculated. The new version now calculates the average price in a region based on the last 7 days with actual transactions, as opposed to trying actual 7 days, then defaulting to larger and larger time spans. The new algorithm will provide a much smoother handling of rarely-traded goods.
Thanks
Thank you for using the Gradient Material Index.
If you find any problems, please do contact me via forum PM.
Quick note: Everyone with an authenticated EM forum account can use the uploader. If this turns out to become a problem, I will restrict this to EM pilots only.
I like this new version, very efficient. Are we likely to see the GMI index expand to cover more items? or is some of the collected data for internal use only?
((a tip for vista installation, run the installation using the "run as administrator" option not the "open"/d-click option, despite being on an admin access level user account it ran into problems creating and writing to the target folder with just "open"/d-click option and didn't trigger the UAC popups to ask permission, just threw some "destination not writable" errors.))

Which items would you like to see included?
There was one user who tried to access the uploader page while not being authenticated on the forums. This caused an error which should now be fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience.
So if I understand well, I put this software in my neocom and you collect market prices ?
Nice, it's a great idea

Correct.
Whenever you view a market order or the market history in your neocom, the data gets uploaded. We also provide a site ("upload" link) that automatically browses the market for data relevant for our index.
Additionally, whenever you do a "show info" on a corporation, we get the information on whether that corp is in a militia or not, used for our intel tools to find Amarr Militia corporations (so we can set standings).
Finally, we also upload details about pilots you find via the "search" function for evewho, who have been very forthcoming with help for our own intel tools.
All these upload options can be separately enabled or disabled if you dislike them.

Well, traditionally the GMI provided data on "inputs" to industry processes, basically all the minerals, materials and components for t1, t2 and t3. Given the reduction in overhead effort in providing the market data, and the autoloader seemingly going through "everything" there is probably scope for providing market data for the products as well as the inputs.
Perhaps there could be more than one xml feed from the index? one for materials, one for t2 products, one for t3 products etc?

If you select "Market History" in the upload table, it will only upload the items in the index, actually. The "Market Data" is "everything on the Gradient pricelist" - we use this to show current market prices in our shop, for example.

Ah, products. Are you really interested in the market history of products? Or are you interested in the market orders for them?
ah ok the market data use make sense.
as far as products data is concerned... I'd be using it to gauge the estimated sales price of selected items. Market order data shows what other people are currently offering, whilst the history shows what prices have actually been used. For some of the lower movement niche items I'd very much want to be able to use the actual sale prices rather than the current offerings.
